Facilities

We have extensive captive bird facilities including ten indoor, environmentally-controlled aviaries and a suite of operant learning equipment. We also have a complex of sixteen outdoor aviaries that are suitable for a range of small to mid-sized bird species.

In our labs we have access to digital microscopes, digital imaging, and morphometrics computing tools. We also have access to a full array of molecular facilities including microarrays and gene sequencers.

We have developed several local field sites, including a complex of over 800 nestboxes for small to medium cavity nesters (e.g. eastern bluebird, Carolina chickadee, tufted titmouse, house wren). These boxes are situated on a range of land types ranging from undisturbed wooded sites through a gradient of human disturbance to urban campuses. We also have access to many natural field sites including our extensive college woods and many natural and restored wetland sites.

William and Mary also has a field station at Cape Charles on the Eastern Shore of Virginia that has served as the focal point for research projects. We also have students conducting research using an extensive network of aquatic mesocosms, maintained at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
